THE Philippines logged a record high 39,004 new cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) in a single day on Saturday, raising the total number of those which are active in the country to 280, 313, according to the Department of Health (DoH).
Of the new cases, 38,271 were tallied from January 2 to 15. The National Capital Region (NCR) had the highest number of infections at 18,142, followed by Calabarzon at 9,172 and Central Luzon, 3,325. Calabarzon is Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon.
Despite the high active caseload, however, about 98.3 percent or 276,113, are mild and asymptomatic, 2,925 are moderate, 1,472 are severe, and 303 are critical.
Of the 78,774 samples that were processed by 304 out of 312 laboratories nationwide, 47.1 percent, or 37,103 were found positive for the virus.
Total recoveries are at 2.835 million, with 23,613 new survivors. The death toll is at 52,858, including 43 new fatalities.
Occupancy rate for Covid-19 patients in the NCR is 55 percent in intensive care units (ICUs), 52 percent in isolation beds and 69 percent in wards. On the national level, occupancy rate in the ICUs and isolation beds is at 48 percent and 51 percent in wards.
